Today I learned that more than half of the children adopted by gay and lesbian couples in the US are children with special needs. I had not realized the numbers were quite so high. Gay couples are overall more likely to adopt older children and minority children and are also more likely to be willing to participate in open adoptions.
There are currently over 100,000 children in foster care.
According to a 2007 study by the Urban Institute there are an estimated 2 million gay people interested in adoption.
I can't help but feel like when we as a culture generally (and politicians like Rick Santorum specifically) discuss gay families, we are not having conversations that actually reflect the reality of daily life.
